↘ artist statement

i am a visual artist working mostly in the field of photography.
i grew up in a small village at the edge of the thuringian forest in eastern germany.
this landscape, both idyllic and fractured- shaped my perspective, serving as a point of origin and critical reflection. in my works i am often blurring the lines between documentation and introspection. my themes are often centered around the terms home, belonging, memories, imaginary constructs, the environment and identity.
my aesthetic language is quiet, searching, fragmentary - it reflects an attitude that questions more than it claims. I work with both digital and analog media.

↗ i left my lungs in sonneberg

«i left my lungs in sonneberg» is a collaborative series with jacob heine starting in 2023 and to be continued.
to leave home leaves one with stories. stories of being raised in a place that no more remains the center of life but yet open to re-visitation. to leave means to form an image of what ones ‹home› was. to return means to re-evaluate, to compare what the story tells and what has remained of the place and what stories it tells of itself. «i left my lungs in sonneberg» is a series in which such stories of home-returners and a town intertwine, overlap and differ. in 2023, robert sesselmann became the district administrator of sonneberg, a town of roughly 25 thousand in southern thuringia, ten minutes north of the border to bavaria. he is the first district administrator of the afg (alternative for germany, a conseravtive party whose regional associations in saxony, saxony-anhalt and thuringia have been classified as far-right groups by the office for the protection of the constitution) nationwide. a collection of 18 postcards was displayed at «kunst gegen rechts» at mieze südlich (burgstraße 12, gera) curated by dirk teschner & mieze südlich from may 5th to june 23rd 2024.

afterwards, the series was supplemented with large prints of election partys, demonstrations and sonneberg's first csd, to be exhibited again, this time as a solo exhibiton, at kiosk.6 in weimar from november 25th to november 30th 2024.

↗ feuchte ecke a 165-page artist book. a look into the often-overlooked corners of our living spaces – poetic, banal, yet fascinating. the images were sourced from craftsmen forums, printed in their original size, and centered on the page.

the project was developed in the summer semester 2024 under the guidance of pio rahner & marcel saidov in collaboration with the zentrum für künstlerpublikationen (bremen) and was supported by the kreativfonds of the bauhaus university as part of the course  «books about books».

↗ bewahren people keep things for a variety of reasons. they often feel the need to secure material resources in order to protect themselves from uncertainty and change.
the starting point for my observation here is the cellar. as soon as I enter, i notice hundreds of preserving jars stored on large shelves that reach up to the ceiling. they contain fruit and vegetables grown on the farm. the abundance of past harvests lies here, in this cool room protected from the light. so much that it can't all be used up. the jars in the back rows are covered in a thick layer of dust. everything that is no longer good for consumption ends up serving as a meal for the chickens. other objects are also stored here. containers of all kinds, tiles left over from a previous building project, a handcart for children, plants for the winter. and outside the cellar? things are stored here too. pipes, buckets, plant tubs and even an old car from the former gdr. to an uninvolved observer, this may give the impression of disorder, but in this complex ecosystem there is hardly any object that is ultimately declared garbage.

↗ fluid skin the photo series fluid skin explores the multifaceted relationship between our bodies and the outer world. it invites us to transcend the invisible barriers of our own physicality and move beyond them. in this fluid transition between inside and outside, a liminal space emerges—a place of pause, transformation, and the dissolution of rigid boundaries.
